Elizabeth Banks Feels Judged For Using Surrogacy

Written by Lauri on November 26, 2019

After welcoming Felix in 2011, actress Elizabeth Banks spoke out about her fertility struggles and how using a surrogate helped give her and her husband a miracle. Banks and her husband have two children through surrogacy, Magnus is 9 and Felix is 8. She’s open about her experience, saying her “broken belly” left the couple with no other options, Banks said that she still feels judgement to this day—even amidst all of the progress our society has made.

“Women’s reproductive issues were things you would whisper about in small circles,” Banks explained. “[Now] there’s #ShoutYourAbortion and IVF Facebook groups. I definitely think I’m still judged for what I’ve done and that people don’t understand my choices, but I don’t feel I owe anybody any explanation. And, if my story helps people feel less alone on their journey, then I’m grateful for that.”

Stop the Stigma

At Agency for Surrogacy Solutions Inc, our mission is to remove the stigma to those using surrogacy to complete the family they want. Unfortunately our society judges women for not having a baby and for the manner in which they have a baby. Why is that? We cheer technology that allows us to carry a small computer/camera/map in our hands but we don’t cheer the medical technology that allows someone to create the family they want.

Assisted reproductive technology (ART) helps people all over the world have the family they want. Surrogacy is one such ART that allows anyone who wants a baby to do so by using a gestational surrogate mother.

Whether your straight, single, gay or a couple, if you want to be a parent you should be able to do that without fear of reprisal, shame or judgement. That’s our philosophy at Agency for Surrogacy Solutions Inc because everyone at our agency has either been the Intended Parent or a Surrogate.

For Elizabeth Banks and her husband, they took a painful, personal experience and created a family out of it. “I have been very fortunate in life both professionally and personally,” she said at the time. “The one true hurdle I’ve faced in life is that I have a broken belly. After years of trying to get pregnant, exploring the range of fertility treatments, all unsuccessful, our journey led us to gestational surrogacy.”
